A suspected rapist was fatally shot by a policeman yesterday after he reportedly attacked the rank with a cutlass at Kuru Kururu on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
The man, who was identified as Joel Ross, was shot to his body around 12:30 hours while the police were in the process of arresting him. He was wanted in connection with a rape that was committed at Haslington, East Coast Demerara on Easter Monday.
Crime Chief Leslie James told Stabroek News that Ross had previously been charged with a number of offences. He said the man was implicated in the rape of a 29 year old woman.
James said the woman was walking down a road in Haslington when the man attacked her and dragged her into an empty lot. There, he said, the woman was raped.
He explained that the police acted on some information and went to Kuru Kururu and attempted to arrest Ross who resisted and in the process of attacking the police he was shot.
