The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) last Saturday successfully hosted their third division volleyball competition at the National Gymnasium which saw Achievers B emerging victorious.
The competition attracted six teams which included four male and two female sides. The male teams were: Guyana Defence Force (GDF), University of Guyana, Achievers Junior and Achievers B, while Vanguards and GDF featured in the female category.
For the males, the competition was played on a round-robin basis which produced some very exciting and close encounters. Second place went to the University of Guyana who played with great confidence against a determined GDF team.
For the females, the GDF females had the upper hand and played with much resolve and character. They, too, demonstrated skills and commitment winning two games in their best of three sets. The GDF ladies took the first set 25-23 in a close tussle, the second set went to the Vanguards, 17-25, and the final set played for 15 points. GDF sealed the game at 15-10.
The first and second place winners in the categories were rewarded with cash prizes.
Next in a series of exciting volleyball events planned for 2014 will be the inaugural Linden Beach Volleyball Open slated for May 11 at Linden’s Beach Soccer Court. Teams from Berbice and Georgetown will be travelling to the bauxite mining town for this beach competition.
The activity forms part of the GVF’s mandate to promote the sport in all parts of Guyana so interested persons can have a firsthand view of the game and to also showcase the talent of the players in the sport.
Teams are asked to continue training for this event as their skills and stamina will be put to the test on a different surface taking into consideration the outdoor factor.
