A woman accused of assaulting her partner after being egged on by the man was yesterday released on bail when she appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Elizabeth Ramnarine, of 306 Independence Boulevard, denied that she unlawfully assaulted Johan Craigen, her partner of nine months, when the charge was read by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, on May 1, at about 12:00 hrs, the couple became embroiled in an argument during which Ramnarine slapped and cuffed Craigen about the face. The man reported the matter and Ramnarine was charged.
In her defence, Ramnarine explained that Craigen was usually in the habit of being abusive and, on the date, he had held on to her hands and had been slapping himself.
A tearful Ramnarine relayed that she had become frustrated and had hit out at her partner.
Prosecutor Mangru raised no objections to bail, though he disclosed to the court that the defendant had a previous matter before Court 10 but had never appeared.
Ramnarine was placed on $25,000 bail while the matter was transferred to Court 10 for May 30.
