The Guyana Amateur Basketball Association’s Inter Association competition will get underway this weekend.
The first match of the series will pit perennial rivals Georgetown against Linden at the Mackenzie Sports Club court on Saturday.
Prior to that game, the female Georgetown and Linden matchup will be staged.
On Sunday, Georgetown will play Berbice at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
There will be two supporting games on Sunday one featuring Ravens and Pacesetters second division teams and the other between Republic Nets and the President’s U19 team.
According to a press release from the GABF, “The performance of the players in the feature games will be one of the factors used for selection to the GABF male and female national squads for training in preparation for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Seniors Championship scheduled for July 1-12 in Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI).”
The release added that the GABF has begun reaching out to government and corporate stakeholders to fund the $12m needed for Guyana’s male and female teams to play at CBC Seniors Championships.
“The greatest pride athletes feel is to successfully represent their country and the GABF will make every effort to ensure that Guyanese basketballers are represented at the CBC games and given the opportunity to bring glory to their country by competing and winning,” the release stated.
Matches to determine the winner of the Inter-Association Series will be played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on May 25 with two supporting games Pepsi Sonics vs. the President’s Under 19 team and Melanie Patriots vs. Plaisance Guardians.
The series will conclude in the mining town of Linden on May 31 where after two decades Linden will host Berbice in the final feature game with the penultimate game being played between the senior women players from Georgetown and Linden.
“Association squads have been in training over the last few weeks and competitive and exciting basketball is in store for basketball fans,” the GABF release ended.
