Guyana will be one of 123 IAAF member federations to take part in the 2014 edition of the IAAF World Athletics Day this weekend.
According to a release from the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), the day’s championship will run off tomorrow at the Police Sports Club, Eve Leary, commencing at 10:00 hours.
The AAG’s programme is below:
1. Inter Schools Champion-ship (under 16 as at December 31, 2014; Born in 1999, 2000, 2001)
(a) Events Boys & Girls
Track – 80m; 150m; 1000m; 1500m/2000m Race Walk
Field – Long Jump; Shot; Discus, Javelin
(b) Entry – entry is FREE. Each athlete must compete in two (2) events-one (1) Track & one (1) Field.
(c) Awards – will be made to athletes placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each event.
(d) Points – will be awarded to athletes placing 1st to 6th in each event.
The IAAF Trophy will be awarded to the School gaining the most points.
2. Youth (under 18 as at December 31, 2014; Born in 1997-1998)
(a) Events – Boys: 100m; 800m; 3000m; LJ; Shot; Javelin; 3000m Race Walk
Girls: 100m; 400m; 1500m; LJ; Discus; Shot; 2000m Race Walk
(b) Entry – entry is FREE. Each athlete will only be allowed to compete in
One (1) event.
(c) Awards – will be made to athletes placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each event.
The IAAF website states that the World Athletic Day is now in its 19th year and the IAAF World Athletics Day is the sport’s annual worldwide festival of youth and one of the busiest programmes of competitions in the athletics calendar.
The World Athletics Day offers the opportunity to promote the sport through youth participation in clubs and schools.
The IAAF World Athletics Day when it began in 1996, was initially planned exclusively for youngsters who were members of clubs affiliated to IAAF Member Federations but, in recent years, the scope of the project has broadened to include the participation of school children in team competitions.
The event has now become a complete and an important event which promotes our sport around the world.
The goal of the IAAF World Athletics Day is to firmly establish an important link between the youth, the sport, and environmental conservation.
The IAAF World Athletics Day 2014 takes place in May, preferably the weekend of Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 May.
