Troy Johnson, who was nabbed with 14 grammes of cannabis by a police mobile patrol, was yesterday handed a three-year sentence after admitting his guilt.
Johnson, 20, of 14 Bent Street, pleaded guilty when the charge of possession of narcotics was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
According to Prosecutor Joel Ricknauth, on May 6 police on mobile patrol saw the defendant acting suspiciously while standing on the Northern side of Hadfield and D’Urban Streets. The ranks stopped and a search was carried out Johnson, during which the suspected cannabis was found in his left side pocket. He was told of the offence and arrested.
The accused was taken to the East La Penitence Police Station along with the suspected drug and it was weighed in his presence. He was subsequently charged with the present offence.
When given an opportunity to speak, Johnson sought mercy and pointed out that it was his “first time doing something like this.” According to the prosecutor, the man had no prior convictions but Johnson admitted that he had a pending matter before the courts.
Along with imprisonment, Johnson was fined $10,000 for the crime.
