The US Embassy Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP) recently donated a quantity of sporting gear and shoes to the Mabaruma community to support extracurricular school activities at several schools in that area.
According to a press release, the donation consisted of starter blocks, baton, shot puts, discuses and javelins and other track and field equipment. “This donation supports the community’s efforts to provide an after-school program that will engage the children of six local schools,” the embassy said.
Doreen Roberts, District Education Officer in Mabaruma, said the sports programme will challenge the local youth to work even more diligently to increase self-discipline and become more physically fit. After the HAP representatives presented the equipment, a representative taught several students the proper form and technique of throwing the javelin, shot put and discus.
In collaboration with the NGO Shuzz, and representatives from Wakenaam and Leguan Islands in Region Three, the HAP team provided over 300 pairs of new shoes to children on both islands. The donations were accepted at the Wakenaam Computer School and the Maryville Masjid, Leguan. Community organizers thanked the HAP and US Embassy for its support to the children.
The HAP programme is an initiative under the US Embassy to assist Guyana’s communities in the areas of social, economic and medical development. HAP works to bring together multiple local and international agencies to reach common goals.
