Laing Avenue brushed aside North/South Ruimveldt 3-0 in their third place playoff when the first annual Stag Beer-sponsored Grassroots Foundation Inter-Ward knockout football competition concluded at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Sunday.
Orin Yarde broke the deadlock for Laing Avenue in the 16th minute with a powerfully struck flat right footed attempt from the right side of the penalty area, which settled into the lower right hand corner after he collected a lobbed left sided pass from Jermaine Junior.
Selwyn Isaacs then doubled the lead in the 40th minute, placing his header from the right side of the box into the left hand corner of the net, following a cross from the left side of the park.
The win would be sealed in the 65th minute as Delwyn Fraser netted, thumping his left footed shot from the centre of the box, under the body of the diving custodian into the lower right hand corner of the net.
With the win, Laing Avenue walked away with the $100,000 third place prize. North/South for their showing collected $50,000. In the championship matchup, Wortmanville/Bent Street squeaked past North East La Penitence by a 3-2 score line to be crowned inaugural champions.
