Defending U19 national champions Marian Academy got their campaign off to the perfect start, dismantling Charlestown Secondary 45-7 when the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) conference championships began at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday.
Judah Stephney led the Carifesta Avenue side with 14 points and nine rebounds. He was assisted by Jonathan Mangra, Narayan Ramdhani, Michael Whitehead and Jason Ray Khalil who netted nine, six, five and five points respectively.
Immaculate ball movement and stifling defence would highlight the opening period as Marian Academy romped to 20-0 run in the opening exchanges.
Stephney led the opening assault with 10 points in the period while Whitehead registered all five of his points in the period, as the defending champions continued to attack the paint, scoring easy lay-ups in the process.
Charlestown would eventually get on the board, netting at 2:50 through Andrew David. They would eventually finish the period with a total of three points while Marian Academy amassed a healthy 25 points. The nature of the fixture would continue in the second half as Marian Academy netted 20 points while reducing their opponents to a painstaking four points. Mangra and Ramdhani led the way with six points each in the period through easy fast break points while Stephney netted four points.
In the earlier U16 cross divisional matchup, President’s College led by Kadeem Perkin’s figures of 17 points and six rebounds, crushed the Bishops High 35-13. In the East Coast Conference, Plaisance defeated President’s College 52-46 in their U19 matchup. Nduka Horatio led the winners with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He was assisted by Kelvin Yorrick who grabbed nine points and five rebounds.
Shakeel Garnett led the losers with 16 points and six boards while Jaleel Duke registered 13 points and nine rebounds.
St. Rose’s led by Nathan Saul’s 16 point haul, crushed Brickdam Secondary 66-32 in their u19 Georgetown Conference fixture. Supporting the win with fixtures of 10 points, eight rebounds and 10 points, four rebounds were Keon Marks and Patrice Agrippa respectively. Recording a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds was Joshua Lee. He was assisted by Michael Anderson who netted 12 points and collected nine boards.
In the final U19 Georgetown matchup, the Georgetown Technical Institute (GTI) defeated the Bishops’ High 48-37. Darroll Williams netted a game high 18 points in the win while Carlos Edwards supported with 11 points and six rebounds.
Marvin Durant led the Carmichael Street unit with 14 points whilst Daniel Haynes contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.
