An elderly North Haslington security guard lost his life early yesterday morning after he was struck down by a security van while he attempted to cross the public road in the East Coast Demerara village.
According to a police press release, Vernon Gordon, 68, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital,
shortly after the accident, which occurred at 5:30 am.
The statement also indicated that the driver was in custody and that the vehicle in question was a mini-bus.
Desiree, who has lived with Vernon for 17 years in their house at 76 North Haslington, related that her husband was on his way to Republic Bank on Camp Street, where he works as a security guard. She said when she visited the police station after the accident, she saw the driver in custody and recognised him at once. She said the driver works for Bran’s Security Service. She said that the police did not tell her the suspect’s name but did assure her that the matter was being “looked after.”
According to Desiree, a girl witnessed the accident but she is unaware of who the person is and whether or not the girl has been questioned by the police.
