The Probation Officer attached to the Port Kaituma, Region 1 District is currently in police custody and is scheduled to be transferred to the city today as allegations of rape of a 13 year old have been levelled against him.
Stabroek News understands that the man, who is in his 40s, had asked the parents of the girl to keep her in his care as she was from a hinterland district and her parents could not afford her ready access to schooling.
Her parents agreed and it is reported that shortly after this the abuse began. Last weekend when she visited her parents, the child complained of sexual abuse.
On Monday, police were called in when the parents of the child reported the matter. The girl was taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital for a medical examination which confirmed evidence of sexual contact.
A senior government official told Stabroek News that it was not the first time the man, who also serves as a village councillor and pastor, has been linked to such allegations.
“Nobody’s above the law. It does not matter who … you are he will be made an example,” the official said.
Another source said that the child is traumatized and is fearful about being brought to the city to assist with investigations but the assurance has been given to her parents that she will be given help by the state.
