A Buxton man was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with robbing a mini-bus driver of over $400,000 in jewellery during a gunpoint hold-up.
Marlon Providence, 21, of Lot 49 Company Road, Buxton, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and he was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
It was the case of Prosecutor Michael Grant that on March 15th, at approximate 7:30 pm, bus driver Jumpalili Alfred was standing behind his bus in Stabroek Market, decked out in his jewellery. Providence allegedly approached him and held him at gunpoint and relieved him of $425,000 in rings, chains and bands.
The matter was reported to the police but they were unable to locate the suspect until May 14th, when Alfred saw Providence one afternoon while he was driving. Grant said that Alfred immediately went to the station and took the police to Providence, who was subsequently charged and arrested.
Providence is due for another hearing in Court Three before Magistrate Judy Latchman on May 23rd.
