Fruta Conquerors overcame home side Georgetown Football Club (GFC) by a 3-1 score line in a hard-fought battle when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Stag Beer first division league continued on Wednesday at the GFC ground.
Held at bay by the Bourda unit in the opening period, the Tucville giants opened the scoring in the 46th minute through a Travis Thornhill effort. The diminutive Thornhill raced into the centre of the box, latched onto a flat cross from the right side of the field and directed his right-footed strike into the lower-right hand corner of the net.
Keron Solomon almost levelled the score in the 61st minute when he lashed his right-footed effort just over the crossbar from the centre of the box, after pouncing on a loose ball inside the area following a goal-mouth scrimmage.
They doubled their lead in the 73rd minute compliments of an Eon Alleyne right-footed penalty kick conversion to the lower right-hand corner, following a clumsy challenge on captain Delon Williams inside the right side of the box.
GFC was denied the woodwork in the 79th minute when a flat left-footed Sherwin Pinder effort from just inside the centre of the penalty box came crashing off the left upright, much to the delight of the struggling Conquerors backline.
Allan Spencer eventually cut the deficit to one five minutes later, placing his right-footed attempt into the left-hand corner of the goal from inside the right side of the box, following a Shad Fernandes long throw into the area from the right touchline.
The Tucville team eventually put some daylight between the two sides when Alleyne netted his double in the 88th minute with a right-footed strike down the middle of the goal, after collecting a Kareem Knights left-sided pass from within the right side of the area.
Winning coach, Calvin ‘Fluman’ Allen, in an invited comment said, “We didn’t had best preparation going into the game and with a few young players stepping in the squad , I didn’t expect to get them to the team and get a smooth game.”
He further said, “I didn’t expect the whole transition to be easy. For most of the times we were way below our standard for the first 45 minutes. Following the interval after getting a few points over to the players, we had an improved showing in the second half.”
“It was still not satisfactory and we will be back on the ground and try to smooth out a few things for a final game. We need to win that game,” Allen said. The action continues today at the same venue with a doubleheader. In the opening fixture at 6.30pm, Fruta Conquerors will face off against Flamingo FC while Sunburst Camptown will lock horns with the Guyana Police Force in the feature match at 8.30pm.
