Nyron Joseph walked away with the under-19 title, overcoming Benjamin Mekdeci 3-2 when the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) 2014 Woodpecker Products junior national championships concluded at the Georgetown Club yesterday. Joseph would take a 1-0 in their matchup as he won the opening battle 11-9. Mekdeci would quickly respond as he took the second set 11-6. He would then take the lead for the first time in the matchup, claiming the third set 11-9.
Joseph would battle back in the fourth duel, winning by an 11-3 score line. With Mekdeci struggling to maintain his fitness, the experienced Joseph would quickly capitalize, clinching the title by winning the final set 11-7.
Mekdeci for his valiant showing collected the second place trophy while Alec Melville finished third. In the Girls 17-19 division, Akeila Wiltshire emerged as the winner. She was followed by sibling Larissa Wiltshire and Taylor Fernandes who finished second and third respectively.
In the Boys u-17 division, B. Mekdeci was adjudged the winner. Rounding out the second, third and fourth place spots were Shemane Griffith, A. Melville and Matthew Phang.
On the distaff side of the same section, Larissa Wiltshire emerged as the division’s champion. Following in the second, third and fourth positions were T. Fernandes, Rebecca Low and Makeda Harding correspondingly.
S. Griffith was adjudged to be the Boys u-15 champion while Shomari Wiltshire and Alex Cheeks finished second and third respectively. In the Girls 13-15 section, R. Low was declared the winner while M. Harding and Sarah Lewis finished second and third respectively.
In the Boys u-13 section, S. Wiltshire once again showed his superior skills to emerge as the division’s champion. He was followed by Daniel Islam, Anthony Islam and Gianni Carpenter who finished second, third and fourth respectively.
In the final female division, Madison Fernandes was adjudged the u-11 champion. Completing the second, third and fourth positions were Kirsten Gomes, Haley Carpenter and Paige Fernandes.
On the male side of the same division, S. Wilshire emerged as the champion. He was followed in the second, third, fourth and fifth positions correspondingly by G. Carpenter, Demetrius DeAbreu, Michael Harding and Dominic Collins.
In the final division, James Mekdeci emerged as the Boys u-11 novices’ champion. Completing the second and third positions were Kamir Khan and Liam Carpenter respectively.
