Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) has extended its appreciation to all customers for their patience with regard to Sunday’s emergency load shedding exercise.
The company in a press release stated that the exercise was implemented because of two malfunctioning Wartsila engines. This resulted in the loss of 11 MW of power during a scheduled overhaul of a second unit in Kingston. The load shedding exercise was therefore implemented as there was not enough power to meet the demand.
The company related that power should return to sections of the Demerara system shortly after 1 pm yesterday when repairs to one of the units would have been completed. GPL further stated that other affected areas should be repowered after midnight when the repairs to the second engine should be completed.
