The commencement of the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of popular drugstore owner Harold Rachpaul was yesterday postponed after the prosecution asked for time to brief witnesses.
Orin Kevin Roberts of Lot 3 ‘C’ Field Sophia is accused of murdering the 84-year-old Rachpaul some time between August 18 and 19, 2011, during a robbery at his 75 Robb Street, Lacytown premises.
Although four witnesses scheduled to offer evidence turned up at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry announced that the PI would be adjourned until June 9, so as to ensure the prosecution properly briefed the witnesses.
According to Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, 17 witnesses are on record to offer evidence, including the son and grandson of the deceased.
