The Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) decentralizing drive of the fistic sport will continue on Saturday with the staging of a card dubbed ‘The Mahdia Independence Showdown’.
During an update with the media for the event yesterday at the Ministry of Sport, GBA’s president, Steve Ninvalle said the 12-fight card would be an historic one.
“This is the first time we will have amateur boxing of this magnitude going to an interior location,” Ninvalle disclosed.
He added “If we are to move the sport of boxing forward we will need all hands on board.”
Ninvalle also congratulated the event’s promoter, Mark Young for the “bold initiative” and also noted that the association will stage its next card in Buxton on May 31.
Young told the media that Saturday’s event will be held at Vidya’s Courtyard.
The promoter also noted that the card is geared towards starting a gym in the Region 8 community.
According to Young, the pugilists will be competing for trophies and medals. The best boxer will be awarded a cell phone compliments of Cell Phone Shack.
Sponsors include Courts, The Trophy Stall, Star Party Rentals and others.
Meanwhile, Technical Director of GBA, Terrence Poole revealed that
“Mahdia is somewhere we wanted to have amateur boxing for a long time.”
Poole went on to state 11 boxers from the city based gyms, Harpy Eagles and Forgotten Youth Foundation will face opponents from Mahdia and the Essequibo Boxing Gym.
GBA’s TD further added that the association is planning to host a card in Skeldon later in the year.
Bell time is 19:00hrs.
