The Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) will continue its efforts to raise social consciousness about HIV tomorrow when it hosts its 5th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial on the steps of the St. George’s Cathedral.
Under the theme “Let’s Keep the Light on HIV,” a press release from the organisation said the event will serve as a community mobilisation campaign and aims to bring together affected areas, policy makers, health professionals, religious leaders and members of the public in a show of solidarity for persons infected and affected by HIV.
Much emphasis will be placed on ending stigma and discrimination against persons living with HIV while attendants are invited to show their support through the arts, it added.
According to SASOD, much has been done to improve and advance the HIV response in Guyana, but much more is still needed.
Though the event has only been celebrated in Guyana over the past few years, the international effort has been in existence for the past 31 years.
The activities are scheduled to be kicked off from 5pm and to conclude at 6:30pm.
