Four retired educators were honoured for their outstanding contributions at a function organized by the eight cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC). The educators: Deserean Benjamin, Zalimoon Khan, Eulis Tasher and Dresma Moore provided a combined 150 years of committed service.
The event was being held for the second year in collaboration with the Berbice Bridge Company Inc. (BBCI) at the St. Francis Xavier Training Centre.
The former teachers each received a medal, plaque and a special gift for their outstanding contribution towards the development of education.
Secretary/Chief Execu-tive Officer of the RHTYSC, Hilbert Foster told the gathering that over the years the club “has placed special emphasis on the promotion of education and has been honouring numerous outstanding teachers.”
The awardees were selected by the RHTYSC and the teachers union in Berbice based on “years of services, discipline, attitude, classroom performances and relationship with students/peers.”
Foster lauded them as “heroes of Guyana’s educational sector who have touched and changed the lives of thousands of youths who have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, educators…”
In his remarks, president of the Guyana Teachers Union Mark Lyte said the educational sector is on the rise because of the combined effort of everyone involved.
He challenged the “current generation of teachers” to learn from the experiences of the awardees and to be proud representatives of the teaching profession.
Also present was Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Juan Edghill. He thanked the four awardees for their remarkable contribution to the development of Guyana and urged them to continue to share their knowledge.
Shemaine Campbell, captain of the RHTYSC female team expressed gratitude to CEO of the BBCI, Omadat Samaroo. She said the cricketers were “pleased to honour heroes of excellence…”
The eight teams that organised the tribute were: the Farfan and Mendes under 15, Bakewell under 17 and Second Division, Pepsi under 19 and intermediate, Gizmos and Gadgets under 21 and First Division and Metro Female team.
