A Grove man was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared in a city court charged with a $50,000 theft.
Sherwin Scipio, 33, of Lot 287 Grove Housing Scheme, denied that he, on May 25, at Grove, East Bank Demerara, broke and entered the home of Deon Burnett and stole $50,000.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail on the grounds of the prevalence of the offence and the likelihood of more charges being laid against Scipio. Jones also stated that the defendant was seen by Burnett, who knew him for several years. Jones added that Burnett tried to stop Scipio by pelting him with a pepper bottle but Scipio took a knife and stabbed Burnett on his arm and made good his escape.
Scipio, on the other hand, told the court that he was selling on the day in question. He said he entered the yard, but maintained that he did not steal anything. In fact the defendant said it was Burnett who chased him with a piece of wood after he accused Scipio of the theft. “Me ain’t go in this man house,” reiterated Scipio.
Subsequently Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded Scipio to prison and transferred the case to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
The matter was adjourned until June 9th.
