City Mayor Hamilton Green has filed a $100 million lawsuit against the publisher of the Guyana Chronicle newspaper and its editor over the publication of a column that he says libeled him.
In addition to the damages, Green’s suit also asks the court for an injunction restraining the defendants, Guyana National Newspapers Limited and Mark Ramotar, from further printing, circulating or distributing the libel or any similar libel about him. An order was subsequently issued by acting Chief Justice Ian Chang, pending a determination of a summons in the case.
The suit was initiated as a result of accusations in the newspaper’s April 24, 2014, ‘Old Kai: Chronicles of Guyana’ column, titled ‘So is the Town Clerk accusing Mayor Green of Armed Robbery.’ Green contends that the accusations of serious criminal offences, being terrorism and armed robbery, are calculated to injure his credit and his reputation in office as the Mayor of Georgetown irreparably.
