Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Head Coach Darcel Harris says while there are areas that his team could have improved on, they gave a good account of themselves in the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) inter-association tournament.
“The chemistry wasn’t the best but we showed a lot of team character and played through and gave a good account of ourselves. We had to really work hard but we had a never give up attitude,” he said in a telephone interview with Stabroek Sport. “It was good team performance. We improved on the defensive end and we were able to make some jumps shots. However we still had the problem of not converting some contested lay-ups that we should have made.”
Asked if he was satisfied with his team’s showing during the event, Harris said, “I was pleased, we weren’t intimidated even though we went to Linden. We didn’t have our best game in Linden but when we came back to Georgetown, we did enough and came away with the win.”
“I was also pleased with the style of basketball played between Georgetown and Linden. It was very competitive games as there was no blowouts. It was a good showing on both sides,” he added. When questioned about the areas that the side improved on during the match, the coach said, “We had a better defensive team showing in the second game. It wasn’t the level we had expected but it was ok enough for us to get the win.”
According to Harris, rebounding and perimeter shooting are also two areas that can be improved upon going forward. “We got good shooters but they weren’t able to come off. It’s not like at the club level where they would have more minutes, this is a different situation,” he said. “It was a great challenge. We had all the stars from the Georgetown clubs and we had to try our best to mobilize and get the best out of them. We wanted to give everybody a chance to showcase their talent for showing for national selection. It’s a mixture, you want to win but you also want to give everyone a fair chance.”
