A Guyana Power and Light (GPL) electricity pole is on the verge of falling into the yard of the St. John’s College on Waterloo Street, Georgetown and the company is being accused of ignoring the situation despite an official report.
School officials, who asked not to be named, said the state of the electricity pole was brought to teachers’ attentions by students who were playing in the yard.
GPL Public Relations Officer Shevion Sears-Murray yesterday said the matter should have been immediately reported to GPL’s Network Manager and she assured the situation would be rectified in a timely manner, while noting that the Network Manager was very.
The school officials said a member of GPL’s emergency crew visited the school on Monday afternoon and said that the pole would be fixed the following (Tuesday) morning, but nothing was done.
They said the GPL crewman also informed teachers at the school that the wire lying in the school yard attached to the pole which supplies electricity to the school building, is of no danger to the school children since the wire is sealed and the copper wires aren’t exposed.
When Stabroek News visited the school yesterday afternoon, school children were seen playing cricket near the wire.
Teachers voiced their concern for the well-being of their students. “Some children does be destructive, suppose one of them decide to cut the wire,” a teacher said.
