A Pomeroon River man is now a guest of the state for the next 16 months after he was convicted of break and enter and larceny and simple larceny.
Kelvin Manie, 25, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday where he answered to the charges mentioned above. The police alleged that between May 20 and May 31 in the Lower Pomeroon River, Manie broke and entered the dwelling house of Leslie Benjamin and stole an amplifier valued $360,000.
It is also alleged by the police that on May 15 at Charity, Essequibo Coast, Manie stole one Samsung Galaxy S4 phone valued $85,000 property of Raywattie Narine.
Manie pleaded guilty to the break and enter offence and not guilty to the simple larceny charge.
The young man who works in the interior as a jetman was not represented.
According to the police, on May 20, Benjamin secured his home and left for the interior where he works. On the May 31, he returned home and discovered that his home had been broken into. He made several checks and found that an amplifier was missing. He then made several enquiries which led to a third party, Jason Price, at Henrietta who claimed that Manie had sold him the amplifier for $140,000. The matter was reported to the police and Manie was arrested and told of the allegation which he admitted to. The stolen item was recovered and lodged with the police. Manie told the court that he and another friend were under the influence of alcohol when the act was committed and said he was very sorry. However, he said that he did not steal the mobile phone.
After the matter was considered by the Magistrate, Manie was granted $40,000 bail on the simple larceny charge and he was sentenced to 1 year, 6 months’ imprisonment on the break and enter charge. He will return to the Charity Magistrate’s Court on June 16 for commencement of trial.
