The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) yesterday said that it was postponing the start of its National T20 Franchise League which was scheduled to commence this month.
According to a press release from the GCB they have decided not to stage the tournament which was billed to commence prior to the New Zealand Test match due to the very uncertain climate surrounding its cricket administration
“At a recent meeting of the Executive Committee of the Guyana Cricket Board, it was unanimously agreed to postpone this highly touted National T20 franchise league,” the GCB release stated.
“The GCB regrets the fact that Guyana has also lost out on hosting international cricket at our World famous Providence Stadium with the
Transfer of the New Zealand test match to Barbados but this decision was totally outside the control of the GCB,” the release added.
According to the release, the league would have seen at least 90 of our top local cricketers from around the country and about 20 Regional cricketers participate in an eight (8) team tournament over a 10 day period. Discussions had already commenced with sponsors and very competitive teams were identified. “Everything has now been put on hold, we thank those entities and individuals who submitted expressions of interest and promise that your correspondences would be placed on record and given priority when we are in a position to launch our league” the release stated.
GCB informed Stabroek Sports that there is no new date set to accommodate the tournament but due to the current state of cricket it’s unfair to have businesses investing.
