A mother was yesterday found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison for burning her nine-year-old daughter on the face after questioning the girl about stolen money.
The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond, who conducted the trial of hairdresser Patricia Pasha, which ended yesterday at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Courts.
The charge against her stated that on January 5, 2013, at 15 Norton and Camp streets, Georgetown, she inflicted grievous bodily harm on the girl. The woman had pleaded not guilty to the charge, after which the trial commenced.
The police’s case was that on January 4, 2013, the woman gave her daughter her bag, which contained $5,000.
The following day, she checked and discovered that $1,000 was missing, which caused her to question the child, who said that she did not know what happened to the money.
The court had been told during the trial that the defendant had taken a knife sharpener, placed it on a lit stove and burnt the child on her left cheek. The child was taken to the Georgetown Hospital, where she obtained a medical certificate after being seen by a doctor. Officials from the Ministry of Human Services were called in along with the police and the investigations led to the elder Pasha being arrested and charged.
