Three days after the body of young mother of three Shelly Persaud was found dead with her head submerged in a bucket of water, her partner of nine years was yesterday faced with a murder charge.
Vindra Seeram was remanded to prison after the charge for the capital offence was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in a city court.
Seeram was not required to plead to the charge, which alleges that he murdered Persaud at the Lot 34 Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara home they shared with their three young daughters.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said that even though nine witnesses have been gathered, the investigation into the murder is still incomplete. He indicated that the police would need a minimum of three weeks to complete the investigation. As a result, Seeram’s next court hearing was scheduled for July 4th.
According to the deceased’s father, Orin Morris, Persaud was found with her head inside a five gallon bucket of water. An autopsy found that Persaud died of drowning and manual strangulation
Even though the couple were together for quite a long time, relatives related that the two often fought with each other and further stated that Seeram had a habit of drinking after these fights. They opined that even though they were aware of this happening, they never thought he would kill her.
The funeral for Shelly Persaud has been set for Sunday.
