Police wives group locked out of Eve Leary office

Members of the Police Wives Association say they are being barred from entering their office at the Police Headquarters in Eve Leary.

One member of the association, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they have been receiving resistance from senior members of the force since the retirement former commissioner Leroy Brumell.

The member contended that they were locked out of the office on several occasions and they attempted to contact Acting Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud, he refused to speak with them.

Stabroek News telephoned Persaud yesterday, but he refused to speak on the issue and hung up the phone.

The members said they also called Assistant Commissioner in charge of Administration Balram Persaud, but he told them his phone was not working properly. Subsequent attempts failed, they said.

Efforts by this newspaper to contact Balram Persaud were also unsuccessful.

“What are we going to do now?” another member said. “Why are they doing this? We were given permission to use this building in 2006 so why are they locking us out now?” the woman said, arguing that if the police wanted them out of the compound they should submit it in writing or the commissioner should meet with them to talk.

The woman said the association’s activities were stalled because they were locked out constantly. She added that the locks were changed several times to prevent them from entering and the police gave them no reason why those steps were taken.

She stated that on Friday they went to the building and were met with new locks. “We had to find another place to conduct our activity,” she said, noting that everything in the building belonged to the association and the police had no right to lock them out.

“We can’t just sit down and accept what is happening. We have contacted them and we have had no response. Why can’t the commissioner meet with us?” she said, adding that the association was serving communities for over 61 years.
