The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) remembers former West Indies player Ivor Mendonca as a disciplined man who tried to instil similar virtues in the young cricketers he coached at the Georgetown Cricket Club.
“Ivor, a former West Indies wicket-keeper/batsman, will always be remembered for the excellent work he did with the young cricketers in the Georgetown area especially at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) where he was Coach and also Team Manager,” a press release from the GCA said. “Ivor will be missed around the cricketing circles in Georgetown and the GCA recognizes that his death has left a void that will be very difficult to fill.”
Mendonca played two test matches for the West Indies in 1962 against the touring Indians. He made a top score of 78 in his first test match while averaging 40.5 at the end of his two games. He also played 10 first class matches, scored 407 runs and averaged 31.30.
Mendonca died on Saturday at age 79.
The GCA extends condolences to his family and friends.
