Ronald Sookraj, who was asked by one of the victims of a house fire at Delph Street, Campbellville, to help clean in its aftermath, is being accused of stealing $1M in gold and silver jewellery during the exercise.
A 47-year-old weed cutter, Sookraj was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum $100,000 after denying the charge read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in a city court.
The charge against Sookraj stated that on June 16, at Georgetown, he stole a quantity of gold and silver jewellery together valuing $1,360,000 and which was the property of Odessa St Hill.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Sookraj, said that his client had no intention to steal the items and requested reasonable bail.
According to him, Sookraj was one of a number of other persons who was asked by St Hill to assist in a clean and clear-up exercise in the aftermath of the fire.
When asked, the court was informed that all the items had been recovered.
Sookraj was then placed on $100,000 bail and the case was adjourned until July 11.
