Demerara and Berbice will compete for the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) under-17 limited over title tomorrow after the second round match between Essequibo and Berbice planned for the Wales Community Development Centre Ground yesterday was abandoned due to a damp pitch and wet outfield caused by overnight rain.
Demerara which is ahead on eight points after comprehensively winning their first round match against Essequibo by 10 wickets, will face Berbice which has one point gained from their washed-out game against Essequibo.
Each team gains four points for a win, however, Demerara are ahead after claiming four additional fast bowling points (a point for every wicket taken by the fast bowler).
Meanwhile, the encounter between Essequibo and Berbice ended after what would have been the lunch interval and the fourth pitch when officiating umpires Zaheer Mohamed and Edward Bowen inspected the ground and took a decision to cancel the game.
The game’s abandonment left Essequibo on one point after two games, a loss and a draw and a failed attempt at defending their title. It also ended Essequibo’s unsuccessful 2014 youth campaign as they failed to claim any of the three titles that were up for grabs.
Demerara will have a chance to claim all three titles if they overcome Berbice tomorrow at the Everest Cricket Club ground. However, there’s still a chance that Berbice can win the crown with a big win over Demerara.
