A motorcyclist died after he collided with the open door of a parked car at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, late Thursday evening.
Wallace Nurse, 58, of Lot 17 West Road Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, was riding with his wife as the pillion rider on the bike at the time of the accident.
Police, in a statement on the accident, said investigations have revealed that Nurse was driving his motorcycle, CC 9486, when he collided with the open door of a parked car. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The police also said that the driver of the car is in custody, assisting with the investigations.
Jophel Nurse, the wife of the deceased, told Stabroek News that she and her husband were on their way home. She said it was approximately 10:30pm and the road was extremely dark. Nurse was heading east on the Railway Embankment road, in the vicinity of Goedverwagting, the distraught widow, recounted.
“When he saw the car,” she added, “he swerved but he hit the open door.” Jophel explained that her husband, who pitched a few yards away, landed on his face and never made a sound thereafter. Jophel, who escaped with a swollen and bruised left hand, said they were both wearing helmets and were not going at a fast rate.
She said the driver claimed he had stopped to fix something on his car, but she clearly remembers that the car did not have its hazard lights on.
Jophel told this newspaper that the police have since taken a statement from her.
Nurse is survived by his wife and three children.
