Cassia fistula commonly called Golden Shower tree or Indian Laburnum as its name suggests, originated from the Indian sub-continent and South-east Asia.
The flower is the state flower of Kerala in India and is also the national flower of Thailand, symbolizing Thai royalty.
This magnificent ornamental tree can be found throughout the Caribbean and Florida. It is often planted as a shade tree to line the streets, parks and the boulevards of many tropical cities. It grows to a height of approximately 40 ft and produces yellow blossoms in large numbers.
Each flower comprises of 5 yellow petals with the stamens exposed. After fertilization each pistil develops into a long, brown fruit pod.
This tree can be grown from seed. A Golden Shower was planted by Ptince Charles when he visited Guyana at the DDL Head Office compound at Plantation Diamond. Examples of it can also be seen in the City of Georgetown.
NB: Once again a large number of orchids, Anthuriun Lilies and Peace Lilies in plastic terra cotta-style pots were stolen last weekend in Georgetown. Someone had a field day and is enjoying their ill-gotten gains. Be on the alert, as you may be the next victim.
Until next week, happy gardening!
