A 50-year-old man died in hospital yesterday two days after he was struck down by a car at Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD) as he was allegedly attempting to cross the road. The driver of the car was rearrested following his death.
Dead is Balraj Bisnauth called ‘Cheddie Boy’ of Vryheid’s Lust, ECD.
Police said in a press release that around 22:30 hrs last Thursday Bisnauth “was struck down by a motor vehicle while he was alleged to have attempted to walk across the Montrose Public Road, ECD.” The release said he was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed during yesterday morning.
His sister Lalita Beepat, told Stabroek News that she was asleep on Thursday night when a man known to her informed her about the accident. She said the man had witnessed the accident.
According to Beepat, when she arrived at the hospital, machines were hooked up to her brother’s body and he was being attended to by a doctor. She recalled that while there the driver’s mother told her that Bisnauth ran across the road and was struck down. She said she told the woman that was not possible as her brother walked slowly and could not run.
She said the following afternoon (Friday) he was taken to the operating theatre for surgery and when he came out she saw him from a distance. The woman told Stabroek News that they were told that he sustained internal injuries and that his collar bone was broken as well as his right foot in two places.
Around 10 am yesterday, she said that her daughter delivered the news that he had died.
Asked if he was in the habit of being out on the road late, she responded in the affirmative before explaining that he would usually go out and lime and drink.
She said when she visited the scene of the accident what was clear was that he was struck down “in de corna”.
Bisnauth, who did odd jobs around the community to sustain himself, she said, was the kind of person who kept to himself and never stole anything or picked a fight.
He leaves to mourn three siblings and other relatives.
