Crime Chief Leslie James today confirmed that a Guyanese man who was captured in Suriname on Monday was wanted by local police on a murder charge.
Samuel Fable alias Sammy Griffith was nabbed by police in neighbouring Suriname according to Surinamese newspaper, DevSur.
“A suspect for burglaries, he was traced to Anton Dragtenweg in northern Paramaribo on Sunday. When the Arrest Team went to make the arrest he tried to run, so officers shot him in the leg,” the newspaper reported.
In March 2007, Fable along with three others had escaped from police custody after cutting a lock on the moving van they were in and jumping onto the Canje Bridge.
He was on remand for the October 2006 murder of a 27-year-old butcher, Gangaram Busjit at Liverpool, Corentyne.
Two others, Samuel Fraser and Compton Green were also charged for the murder and were freed in August 2009 in the Berbice High Court.
Busjit was gunned down in his backyard. Reports were that Busjit got up around 3 am on the day of his murder to go to the pit latrine, which is located not too far from the house. While downstairs he was shot several times.
Fable is expected to be extradited to Guyana soon.
