Sherona Latchman, a 25-year-old cosmetologist, yesterday paid over more than $20,000 to a representative of DSL Cash and Carry after admitting that she stole two bottles of alcohol from the supermarket by concealing them in her umbrella.
Latchman appeared in a city court charged with simple larceny. It was alleged that on June 3, at the DSL Cash and Carry on Sheriff Street, she stole a bottle of Ciroc, valued $14,224, and a bottle of Absolut Vodka, valued $5, 960.
The mother of one appeared to answer the charge with her minor daughter after it was explained to the court that she had no one to keep the child.
The young woman was unresponsive and shook her head to questions asked by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who presided over the arraignment. She could not give a response when asked why and for what purpose she stole the beverages. The magistrate appealed to her to speak, explaining that she needed to “tell the court something about the offence.”
However, Latchman stood appearing mostly lost, apprehensive and unaware of what was going on.
When asked if the stolen items were at her home, the young woman nodded in the affirmative.
Police Sergeant Bharat Mangru, asked to detail the police’s case, explained that Latchman went into the supermarket to purchase a number of items. During this time, she picked up the alcohol and concealed them in her umbrella, which she placed in her bag, and exited the building. The theft was later reported to the police and the woman was arrested.
When asked by the court to verify the facts related to the court and whether she had the money to repay, Latchman nodded yes.
The woman handed over the sum of $20,184 to a representative of DSL, who was present in court.
The Chief Magistrate subsequently ordered Latchman to cooperate with the probation officer assigned to her and to return to court on July 18 for the presentation of the probation report. She was released on her own recognisance.
