Minister of Agriculture, Dr Leslie Ramsammy yesterday announced that a major drainage project will be undertaken in the Mahaicony area, essentially, phase two of the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary Scheme.
He said the project will be worth 30m Euros (US$41M). He was speaking at the launching of a pump station at Patentia, West Bank Demerara.
It is unclear whether the funds have been approved or when the project will begin. Phases 2 and 3 of the MMA scheme were to be done decades ago. Only the Abary segment of the project was completed. In recent years, Mahaica and Mahaicony have suffered severe flooding. The damming of the Mahaicony River is expected to significantly ease flooding there.
