East Ruimveldt, St Johns and Buxton secondary schools emerged victorious over their opponents when the when the fourth annual Digicel national under-18 knockout football championship continued yesterday.
East Ruimveldt crushed the Carifesta Avenue unit Marian Academy by a 6-1 margin at the Eve Leary ground. Troy Carrington opened the scoring for the Mandela Avenue outfit through an 11th minute strike. He increased their lead when he completed his double with a 39th minute attempt. Alton Benn would then add to the score line, netting compliments of a 47th minute effort.
Marian Academy would eventually pull one back when Damali Thomas etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 77th minute. However, the goals continued to rain for East Ruimveldt when Romell Legall scored three minutes later. He quickly added to his tally, compliments of an 84th minute shot. The match-up was then put to bed in the 86th minute when Legall completed his second half hat trick.
In the Region Four zone, Buxton Secondary defeated Hope Secondary 2-0 at the Beterverwagting (BV) ground. Ato August opened the scoring for the victors with a 54th minute strike while Dillon Wright sealed the win through a 68th minute conversion.
Over at the Dem Amstel ground, in the same division, St Johns Secondary hammered Leonora Vocational Institute by a 6-0 margin. Rolex Henry opened the scoring for the winners; finding the back of the net in the 11th minute.
Cordel Walcott quickly increased the lead; netting with a 19th minute conversion. Trevor Clarke then made it 3-0, etching his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 30th minute. A penalty kick conversion in the 62nd minute by Stephon Bentick further increased their score.
Things went from bad to worse for Leonora when they conceded an own goal six minutes later. Akimbo Henry sealed the huge win when he netted in the 75th minute.
Action continues today with four match-ups programmed across three zones. In the Georgetown conference, Brickdam Secondary will face off against Central High at the Ministry of education ground while St Joseph High will engage the Bishops High at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda. Both encounters are set for 3.30pm.
Over at the Grove ground, Diamond Secondary will oppose Institute of Professional Education from 3.30pm in a Region Four showdown while Berbice High will tackle Skeldon Secondary from the same time at the Skeldon ground in a Region Six match-up.
