Shelly Daly-Ramdyan and Leyland Leacock lost to Anthony Downes and Rebecca Mitchell in a mixed doubles match of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA)/ Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Open tournament Monday at the GBTI Recreational Facility, Bel Air.
Downes and Mitchell won 7-5 6-4 to advance to the next round of the Open mixed doubles category.
Daly-Ramdyan had earlier said that she had expected the game to be a close one and indeed it was with excellent volleys, serves and smashes. She had trouble with hitting the big serves at critical times because of leg cramps. The game was quite tactical though sometimes there were power shots that kept the fans on their feet.
There was also some calls that were challenged by the players but the game was nevertheless a friendly encounter.
In the ladies open, Shawna Gentle inflicted a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Kizzy Richmond while in the men’s Open Gavin Lewis defeated Nicholas Glasgow 6-2, 6-1. The pair of Godfrey Lowden/Phillip Squires defeated Khalif Gobin/ Joseph De Jonge 6-2 6-3 in a men’s doubles encounter.
On Tuesday the Glasgow brothers, Jason and Nicholas defeated Kester Abrams and Bishan Dalip 6-3 and 6-1 to advance to the next round
While the defending men’s doubles champions Anthony Downes and Jason Andrews exhibited their thirst for another title by whipping Benedict Sukra and Craig Campbell 6/0 6/1. Rudy Grant lost to Benjettan Osborne 4-6 7-5 6-2 after being up by a set in the men’s Open singles while Andre Erskine got past Khalif Gobin 6-3 6-3.
The final match up for the night between Krishan Jugdeo and Kijana Lewis ended with Lewis claiming a walk over.
