Eon Smith, accused in December of possessing nearly four kilogrammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking, was yesterday found guilty of the offence and sentenced to four years imprisonment.
Smith, 32, of 123 Third Street, Alberttown, initially appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to his narcotics charge.
Yesterday, before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, the man was found guilty after the state’s prosecutor was able to prove his guilt, beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the police, ranks from the Narcotics Branch, acting on information went to Smith’s home, at Lot 23 B Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust on December 20 and found two amounts of cannabis. The first parcel amounted to 3.215 kilogrammes, while the other amounted to 755 grammes. According to reports, the cannabis was found among clothing and a passport that belonged to Smith.
Smith was said to have orally admitted to owning the cannabis. However, he declined to give a written confession.
Attorney-at-law George Thomas, who had represented Smith in December, had told the court that his client does not live at the address police stated in court.
Along with his sentence, Smith was fined $30,000.
