A miner, accused of stabbing his co-worker in the stomach during a row over duties, was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before a city court.
Charleston Glasgow, of 163 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Gregory Scott on June 24 at Granny Backdam, Omai. He was not required to plead to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
According to police prosecutor Bharat Mangru, Glasgow and Scott were both miners working in the same camp when, on the date in question, at about 8pm, the two had a misunderstanding over who would look after the boss’s operations.
During the argument, Glasgow reportedly armed himself with an eight-inch knife and dealt Scott a stab to the lower abdomen. The injured man was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex and subsequently the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains a patient.
Prosecutor Mangru objected to bail, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence along with the fear that the defendant might not return to court if granted bail as his reasons. Mangru also noted that the virtual complainant was still in the hospital.
Taking the serious condition of the injured man into consideration, the magistrate remanded Glasgow to prison.
He will make his next appearance on July 1 at the Christiansburg Magistrate’s Court.
