The men I’ve dated have all questioned my reason for procuring so much clothes. The greatest puzzle for them is me saying occasionally that I have nothing to wear. They just never seem to get it. I will speak on behalf of a few of my girlfriends and myself in attempt to explain why we shop our heads off, yet have nothing to wear.
When the places I go and the pieces of clothing in my closet are compared, the latter is way higher. This is always the point highlighted by men: ‘You don’t even go out all the time, why it is so impossible for you to find something to wear!’
Speaking from a utilitarian perspective, they have every right to be right. However, women don’t just dress for the purpose of clothing themselves. This just doesn’t happen and I personally feel it never will.
One reason for our sartorial extravagance is that we want to feel good about ourselves; or at least I do. Women crave acceptance from their other half. They want to know they are desired by whom they want to be desired by.
Until that occurs, they will buy clothes like crazy; at least for certain periods of our lives. Or maybe it’s just me.
Men, if she is taking too long to get ready and is indecisive of her clothing choice, it’s probably because your reaction wasn’t too positive. She is restless and she will keep on searching for that right dress to make you speak her language. Kindly use as much sweet talk as possible. Women want to know that you are paying attention. They want to know you like what you see. Shower them with compliments. This will cut your waiting time whilst she is getting dressed and possibly her weird craze for buying so much.
And men, please try your best to not alter the look of your woman unless the situation absolutely calls for it. You are excused and permitted to speak if it’s work or dress-code oriented.
Another reason why women decide to buy so much is because they tend to always want to be in the loop where fashion and things of such nature are concerned. Therefore their wardrobes would have sampled quite a few pieces. Sometimes I have really mixed feelings about the stages I’ve passed through during the course of my fashion life. Each stage represents something different and sometimes I find myself either going back or hating it. The process is long. Sometimes deciding is the real problem and this is why we always have to have that something new.
Build her a bigger wardrobe if you can. Help her sort out the clutter. This is also the reason why we change 50 times in one night. We have had too many trends and our fashion life is like an octopus. Kindly excuse us; most of us are still trying to find our personal style.
I am a moody mammal. Sometimes I feel like electric puff sleeves and sometimes I feel like a house t-shirt riddled with holes. This is just how I function. I am not always at an all-time high. I don’t want to always wear tight jeans because sometimes I don’t feel sexy. I don’t want to always wear heels because sometimes I feel too much like a string. I am moody and maybe others are just like me. This backs up the ‘I have nothing to wear’ statement – we don’t have enough clothes for all our moods. It’s just never enough. Some of us are really complex creatures.
While we sometimes say we dress for ourselves and not because we desire admiration, in most cases the frustration of deciding what to wear is a result of the lack of admiration and acceptance from those close to us.
On the other hand, we are pressured so much by society to look a certain way that the compliment might just help us to start looking past society’s benchmark. Give your girl a compliment today!
