Alliance for Change (AFC) leader Khemraj Ramjattan has said that his party will not support any move for the Guyana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) President Komal Chand to sit on Guyana Sugar Corporation’s (GuySuCo) Board of Directors.
The declaration came after President Donald Ramotar made an unofficial announcement, inviting Chand to sit on the board.
The AFC would much rather a union representative, appointed by the union, sat on the board, and reiterated its call for a professional and competent board of directors at GuySuCo. The AFC believes that the brightest and best persons available should be appointed with a skill set that includes but is not limited to Accounting and Finance, Engineering, Agronomy, Human Resources Management among others.
The AFC said Chand, a highly respected trade unionist unchanged by the corruption churning around him in the PPP, should remain at the helm of GAWU and keep the union from compromising its integrity.
Meanwhile, the party supports Chand’s call for the government to account for money collected from the European Union and full disclosure on all expenditure made in the sugar industry. The AFC believes that the sugar industry can have a good future but has to be unshackled from the grip of the PPP.
