Abdool Rahim, accused of damaging a policeman’s shirt, yesterday denied the charge and his lawyer told a city court that he was drunk, unaware of what he had done but was willing to pay for the shirt.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Rahim, 30, stood accused of resisting arrest and unlawfully and maliciously damaging a shirt, valued $21,500, during an altercation with Constable Ian Roberts, who was acting in the execution of his duty.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, who appeared for Rahim, asked for reasonable bail and told the court that Rahim was intoxicated and did not know what he did. In the circumstances, Fung-A-Fat added, Rahim was willing to repay the Guyana Police Force for the ruined shirt.
Rahim was released on his own recognisance and bonded to keep the peace and the case was adjourned until July 3.
