A 22-year-old man was sentenced to 56 months in jail after being found guilty of breaking into his friend’s home and stealing $6.5 million worth of property, including raw gold.
“Thou shall not steal,” Magistrate Judy Latchman told Sunail Sumra, of 69 Robb Street, Bourda, after she found him guilty of a charge of breaking and entering at the end of a trial. “That is one of God’s commandments and you broke that commandment,” she added.
In November, Sumra had been charged with breaking and entering the Kitty home of his friend, Dexter John. Sumra allegedly stole a quantity of gold jewellery, valued $2.5 million, and $4 million worth of raw gold. Along with the stolen items, $65,000 in cash was reportedly missing as well.
He had pleaded guilty and was remanded to prison until he subsequently received bail from the High Court in the sum of $650,000.
Before sentencing the man, Latchman took a number of factors into consideration, including the fact that Sumra had breached the trust of his friend. She also noted the prevalence of the offence and the need to curb it in society.
Sumra, who had been represented by attorney-at-law Trenton Lake, was sentenced to 56 months at the Camp Street prison.
