Guyana’s Cleveland Forde on Sunday won the men’s section of the CARICOM 10K Road Race, clocking 34 minutes, 52 seconds.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Tonya Nero won the women’s leg for the third time in a row, when the event came off in St. John’s, Antigua/Barbuda.
A release yesterday from the Caricom Secretariat said that ten countries from across the Region gathered in Antigua and Barbuda for the 10th staging of the race. The event, which is held annually to signal the start of the CARICOM Heads of Government conference, featured some 70 athletes.
Key objectives of the event include emphasizing the value of health as a cornerstone for regional development and promoting integration through sport.
Nero got to the finish line in just over 38 minutes to claim the trophy along with a cash prize. Second place went to Euleen Josiah of Guyana while Trinidadian Janel Nedd secured the third spot.
Forde was followed by Elliot Mason of Antigua and Barbuda, in 34 minutes 59 seconds, while Grenadian Radix Graham was third in 35 minutes 17 seconds. Special prizes were presented to six year-old brothers, Mark and Marcus Murphy, for being the youngest to complete the event. The awards were presented by CARICOM Assistant Secretary General Dr. Douglas Slater.
The race was organized and executed through collaboration with the Ministry of Sport of Antigua/Barbuda and the Antigua/Barbuda Athletics Association.
