After adding a third CARICOM 10km champion’s trophy to his collection, distance ace, Cleveland ‘Little Kenyan’ Forde noted that he was happy to be first to the tape on Sunday after missing the event in 2012 and finishing second last year.
Forde who won the annual fixture here in 2010 and 2011 in St. Kitts, clocked 34 minutes and 52 seconds to win this year’s race which was staged in Antigua.
“I’m happy I won on Sunday especially since I didn’t win it since 2011” Forde told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
Guyana’s premier distance athlete added that despite the competitive nature of the race, he could have completed the event much faster but could not due to improper mapping of the route by the organizers. “It was a competitive race as usual but I did not exert myself unnecessarily.
I waited until the end to make my move because it seemed as though even the police (outriders) was not sure of the route to be taken so I decided to stick with the guy that knew the route and went ahead about 300m from the finish.”
Antigua’s Elliot Mason ran in second in 34m: 59s.
The 29-year old revealed that he will now focus on winning some road races on the local circuit (Courts and Neal and Massy 10Ks) as along with the South American 10km and meets in Trinidad and Barbados. He also thanked the National Sports Commission, the AAG and the GOA.
On Sunday, Guyana’s Euleen-Josiah Tanner placed second in the women’s edition. Trinidadian, Tonya Nero won the event for the third successive time. (Emmerson Campbell)
