Two cousins who believe that they were the targets of a driver who hit them on Saturday evening, leaving both men injured, remain hospitalised even while the accused driver is back out on the road.
Michael Anderson, 23, and his cousin, Clovis Drepaul, 18, both of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne were injured on June 29 at about 7pm as they made their way home.
The driver implicated in the accident is known to both men and the injured are puzzled as to what may have aggravated such an attack.
From his bed at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), Anderson said that he had been riding his motorcycle with his cousin proceeding south when a car “braced them off the road.”
Though Anderson explained that he rode as far into the corner as possible, the driver of the car continued to advance on him.
A collision followed soon afterwards and, after hitting the men, the driver reportedly jumped out of his vehicle and said, “I coulda kill y’all! Y’all lucky ya’ll aint dead,” before driving off.
Anderson and Drepaul had to endure a painful half hour wait before help arrived. Anderson added that he had been forced to take off his shirt in an attempt to staunch the flow of blood in his injured foot.
“Luckily I had my phone and I called mammy and she came in a car and took us to the hospital [the Mibicuri Hospital].”
The men were subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being taken to the GPH due to the seriousness of their injuries. They finally arrived at the hospital about 04:00 hrs on Sunday.
Both men suffered open fractures and bone damage to their feet.
According to Anderson, he is due to undergo two more surgeries. He’s unsure of when he will be released from the hospital.
Meanwhile, the accused driver is back behind the wheel after having his vehicle returned to him, Anderson said.
Both men strongly believe that the accident was deliberate. “Even though we swing out he way, he was still coming towards us. We went in the grass corner when he hit we,” Anderson said.
Both of the injured men maintained that they had never had any previous problems with the driver, who they knew simply as “Ronald.”
Ronald, they claimed, is an unlicensed driver who allowed his friend to take “the rap” for him following the accident. “He friend that went in the car with he saying that he’s the driver for the car ’cause he licensed and Ronald ain’t,” Anderson said.
The friend was released on $30,000 bail, they have learned.
“I find it unfair that this man could’ve killed us and he get released,” the men lamented. They added that they are yet to hear anything from the police about a court date as well as the driver in regards to compensation.
