Mary Fung-A-Fat clinched her berth in the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Digicel National Senior Championships yesterday, defeating Larissa Wiltshire by a 3-1 score line at the Georgetown Club squash courts on Camp Street.
Going down 1-0 to Wiltshire after losing the opening set 11-9, Fung-A-Fat would level proceedings as she claimed the second set by an identical score.
She would then edge ahead 2-1 as she clinched the third round 12-10. The win would then be sealed in the fourth set as Fung-A-Fat prevailed 11-9.
In the second semi-final round, Akeila Wiltshire brushed aside Ashley De Groot in straight sets.
A. Wiltshire raced into the early lead, claiming the opening round by an 11-4 margin. It would then become 2-0 as she edged De Groot 12-10 in the second set.
She would then seal her berth in the finale, winning the third set by an 11-9 score line.
The Women’s Plate section saw Victoria Arjoon defeating Andrea King and Alysa Xavier while Kathy Ten-Pow recorded wins over Tiffany Solomon and Taylor Fernandes respectively.
A. Arjoon in her match with King won 11-3, 11-5 and 11-4. She would then defeat Xavier in her second fixture 11-9, 11-8 and 12-10.
Ten-Pow in her matches defeated Solomon 11-7, 11-6 and 11-3 and T. Fernandes 9-11, 11-13, 11-5, 11-9 and 11-8.
In the Men’s Open semi-finals, Chin defeated Jason Ray Khalil 11-4, 11-3 and 11-2 while Alex Arjoon defeated Nyron Joseph 11-8, 11-4 and 11-9. In the Men’s Classic Plate section, Deje Dias defeated Regan Pollard 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7 and Ben Mekdeci defeated Nicholas Narain 11-5, 11-6 and 11-2.
In the Men’s Plate division, Oliver Kear-Downes defeated Joshua Abdool 11-3, 11-6 and 11-9 and Alec Melville overwhelmed Robert Hiscock 11-3, 11-9 and 11-0.
In the Men’s Veterans 35-49 section, Alwyn Callender defeated Brian Yong 11-7, 12-14, 12-10, 11-1 whilst Joe Mekdeci crushed Medhy Ramdhani 11-4, 11-4 and 11-9. The Men’s Veterans 35-49 Plate section saw Phillip Fernandes recording victories over Gerry Mekdeci and Timothy Jonas.
Fernandes defeated G. Mekdeci 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6 while he overcame Jonas 11-8, 11-7 and 11-9. The final matchup of the division saw Stephen Fernandes defeating David Fernandes 11-4, 15-13 and 11-9.
