Police are yet to identify a suspect in the murder of Bharrat Pitamber, who was knifed to death last Tuesday as he was riding home at Grove, East Bank Demerara.
His father, Vijay Pitamber, told Stabroek News that the police returned his son’s belongings and money that was believed to have been stolen.
Pitamber said the police told him that no money was stolen, adding that the police handed over $45,000, which Bharrat received for selling a bird. A cellular phone was also retrieved.
There has been no arrest in the murder.
The 26-year old tailor was fatally stabbed to his heart in a struggle to evade two thieves on his way home. He was also stabbed about hands and back.
The attack occurred opposite the Diamond Fire Station on a lonely road. According to a resident living nearby, Pitamber was riding past a desolate empty lot around 7:45 pm when he was confronted by two men.
The man stated that Pitamber started to put up a fight but was unable to protect himself when one of the men started to “juk” him. The man added that no one went to his rescue because the area was a “hot place” for robbery and people were afraid.
Bharrat’s mother had told Stabroek News that he had left his home to collect money for a bird that he sold for $45,000. It was on his way back home he was killed. “He was my eldest son… look he just get a child, she is barely six months old,” she had cried.
Two nights before he was killed, Bharrat had told his family that he was nearly robbed by two men on the same road.
